Stretching it all out
One of the things I have been working on lately with my training is my stretching. I am not a flexible person by any means. I can count on two hands the number of time I have touched my toes… ever. I was told that becoming more flexible would help reduce my risk of injury. While I don’t find that to be true I do notice improvements in overall performance when I am nice and loose. So I have decided to start a Stretching routine. The routine is shows you how to effectively stretch major muscle groups. Do you stretch before or after your workouts?

Jay,
Just came across your blog — looks like we have been down several parallel paths over the past 18 months or so…..I am new to triathlons (fairly new) and am scheduled for 3 this year…Las Palomas, Nathan’s, and AZ Ironman in November this year — are you still doing events? I would like to know your view on pre-made Ironamn plans on the web (like dominator and or free plans) out there…seems to me individual coaching would be more advantageous — I am contemplating hiring a coach but for me and my family of 6 it is difficult to swallow the $59 a month for a personalized plan…any thoughts….Thanks

Yep, I am still training. Currently training for the Holcomb Valley 50k. It sound like you have a nice race season planned. I think that pre-made plans are ok. It is a low cost way to get some guidance on training. You will want to make sure you get your plan from a reputable source. I have not looked at the plans form either of the places you mentioned above. I prefer the personalized training you get from a coach who understands my goals.
$59/mo is a lot of money so make sure you are getting more than just a personalized plan. I trained for years with Breakaway Training and paid that much for a personalized training plan as well as access to 3 group workouts per week.
Good luck with your race season!!!

Nope, Jay, I usually don’t stretch after workouts, unless there’s something that’s particularly tight. And I *never* stretch before workouts, except as part of a longer warm-up to protect my body. Right now I do a series of ankle exercises to warm up my ankles (which are both giving me trouble), and a few dynamic movements to warm my hip flexors.
I do Yoga regularly, though, and that’s helped my flexibility immensely.
